Last week I watched Lady Macbeth (2016), starring Florence Pugh as Katherine, for the first time. Apart from her role as Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019), this was my second time seeing Florence on screen and I hope it won’t be my last. Based on the novella Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District by Nikolai Leskov—whose title references the Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth—this film shows what lengths a woman will go to get what she wants. It explores layers of oppression: Katherine’s freedom in her loveless marriage is curtailed by her husband and father-in-law—who essentially purchased her as property—while her maid Anna and other servants are indebted to her. Watch Florence give a chilling performance and in a corset at that. Watch Lady Macbeth on Kanopy.
