Last week I rewatched Tangerine (2015), the Sean Baker-written and directed film, which was shot on three iPhone 5Ss. Set on Christmas Eve, the film follows Sin-Dee (played by Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) as she scours Hollywood looking for a woman who’s suspected of being involved with her boyfriend Chester. The movie is both beautifully shot—the sunset colors accent the Black trans actors well—and exciting to watch. Sin-Dee talks and moves at such a fast clip that you’re unable to predict what she’ll do next; her best friend Alexandra (played by Mya Taylor) tags along for much of the way, giving off a much calmer energy. The film climaxes with a confrontation between most of the cast at Donut Time. Watch for a hyperlocal view of Los Angeles—“a beautifully wrapped lie,” according to one character. Watch Tangerine on Hulu and Tubi.
