I watched Shoplifters (2018) for the second time earlier this week. This movie follows the Shibatas, a ragtag family that relies on shoplifting, government pensions, and familial guilt to survive in modern-day Tokyo. Like The Farewell (2019), it features an intergenerational ensemble cast, allowing the viewer to better understand how they navigate poverty through the various occupations available, including work as a day laborer, factory girl, or hostess. You follow the Shibatas through their newest addition: Yuri, a toddler they rescued from parental neglect and hunger. After being fully immersed in their world for two hours, it will become clear why the film has received several awards and nominations, including Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 2019. Watch Shoplifters on Hulu.
