I watched Election (1999) for the first time this week. Starring Reese Witherspoon as Tracy Flick, a type-A overachiever, and Matthew Broderick as Jim McAllister, her civics teacher, I can see why this was an instant classic. Tracy is running for student body president at Carver High School in Omaha, Nebraska, while Mr. McAllister tries to get in her way, tilting the election in his favor. It’s a well-written movie, in line with the other high school gems of the year; *ahem* She’s All That and 10 Things I Hate About You. (What was it about 1999 and teen cinema?) Watch for a dummy Chris Klein, his anarchical sister Tammy, and some sad sack teachers. Watch Election on HBO Max.
